And more importantly for lovers of acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h is reached in 2.7 seconds! It’s even faster than a Formula 1, at least according to Elon.
He didn’t give too many details on how it will differ from what we already know about the Model 3, although he does say that peak torque is achieved at zero RPMs, indicating a robust electric motor. For comparison, Tesla’s larger Model S sedan has a more powerful electric motor with a maximum torque of 903 Nm (636 lb-ft). As well as being smaller in size and lighter in weight, it also achieves peak torque of 1,000 Nm between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm, making it considerably slower than what Elon Musk just unveiled. Musk has been talking about electric motors for some time now: He thinks they’re far superior to internal combustion engines (ICEs), even though the latter is more powerful.

The new engine is stronger and lighter than the previous generation. The one we use in the Model 3 is less than half a millisecond faster to reach full torque than our previous generation. Its insane acceleration – it makes the driving experience enjoyable. Better power density also means we can fit more engines in Model 3 than any other vehicle, which means a lot more range without adding extra weight. On top of that, all of these improvements are achieved with minimal increases in cost and complexity. In other words, there is no other electric vehicle on the market whose engineering approaches that of the Model 3.
Will more car manufacturers use it?
Traditional internal combustion engines consist of a collection of moving parts and valves that must be precisely aligned. If they aren’t, they can fail or wear out over time, leading to costly breakdowns and repairs.
By contrast, electric motors have only one moving part: an electromagnet or induction device that pushes and pulls on a piece of metal to generate torque. This design makes them more compact than internal combustion engines and much less likely to fail – and according to Musk, it also means electric car powertrains will last longer. Tesla’s unwritten fundamental goal is to build a great car, not an electric vehicle like any other, he said. This is a great technological leap.

The Renault Zoe – the best-selling EV in Europe so far – has only one moving part in its powertrain. Other automakers might also find ways to use different motors that run longer on a single charge and don’t rely on rare earth metals. As EV technology advances, an array of options could emerge. But either way, it looks like electric vehicles will be more and more reliable in the years to come.
What’s next for Tesla?
Tesla has long claimed that its next car – smaller than the Model S and costing about half the price will go into production in 2017. At Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting, Mr. Musk revealed some additional details about the next product of his company: It will be equipped with a new type of engine and will look like nothing else on the road.
