2. In both cases, the vehicle is primarily driven by an internal combustion engine.
3. But the electric motor is also connected to the same drivetrain, so it can provide additional power to the road wheels when acceleration is needed, thus saving fuel.
4. Since electric motors are built into the propulsion system, the Parallel Hybrid can only be powered by electric propulsion at low speeds only for driving around town, for a very limited time because the batteries are relatively small.

Mild hybrid

• A type of hybrid car that is basically similar to the Parallel hybrid.

• However, you get the benefit of increased fuel efficiency.

• Stored in the battery, and recycled back into the drive-on-demand system.

Plug-in Hybrid

1. It is one of the newest additions to the list of alternative powertrains in the hybrid vehicle types.
2. And its popularity is growing very quickly.
3. It essentially moves the Parallel hybrid concept closer to a fully electric vehicle.
4. That is by adding larger batteries that can be charged from the external power source thus providing a much better electric-only package.
5. Parallel hybrids are increasingly being distributed with the PHEV option.
6. So, for example, the latest Toyota Prius in the PHEV option got a driving range of about 30 miles from electric only.
7. Whereas normal driving in a Prius hybrid might go a mile in electric drive mode before the engine gets involved if you’re lucky.
